The Benti Nenka processing plant is located in the village of the same name ("Kebele") in the Humbella Wamena district of Gugi, Ethiopia. We have sold "Benti Nenka" coffee before, but this time the coffee comes from a new supplier. There are several washed coffee processing plants in the area with the same name, which can be confusing! Moreover, they may all be sourcing from the same coffee farmers, meaning that coffee from different plants often has a similar flavor profile. This processing plant sources its coffee beans from about 700 coffee farmers near the village, most of whom have only about 150 coffee trees. The light roast coffee presents a restrained fruity aroma, a clear and transparent sweetness, and earthy notes of tea and fragrant floral aromas. The dry coffee grounds have a sweetness mixed with a hint of fruit juice, followed by the aroma of roasted sugar, and finally a subtle floral note, adding a touch of refinement. The wet coffee has a honey-like sweetness, as well as aromas of sweet tea and jasmine. Upon first sip, the jasmine aroma is particularly prominent, with a long finish. As the coffee cools, fruity notes emerge, such as canned pear and white grape juice, along with a lemony citrus freshness, interspersed with a hint of lemon verbena, adding a captivating fragrance to the coffee. I particularly enjoyed the taste of this light roast coffee after cooling, which also had a hint of barley tea, perfectly blended with the acidity of lime, finishing with a pleasant tannin bitterness. The coffee beans at this roast level had a very transparent sweetness, like syrup, with earthy tea notes in the aftertaste (reminding me of Pu-erh tea and woody mate). I found medium roast coffee beans to be juicy, with fragrant floral notes and a syrupy flavor similar to nut syrup (think of Kerns apricot drinks), along with a hint of bitter cocoa.
