Hawaii's Big Island coffee offers a unique market for roasters worldwide. "Kona" refers to a vast expanse of fertile farmland and volcanic cliffs off the island's west coast, one of the island's most densely populated areas, rich in indigenous political history and some of the deepest modern commercial agricultural heritage. Compared to almost every specialty in the world, Kona grows at a relatively low altitude (equivalent to 500-800 meters). However, its unusually high latitude, roughly the same as Mexico City, makes Kona one of the northernmost tropical coffee-growing regions in the world. This unique global geography, combined with the island's abundant resources—including fertile soil, proximity to the Pacific Ocean, a favorable agricultural sector, and a tailored Arabica coffee gene—has earned Kona coffee a small but loyal following.
