Kangunu Farmers’ Cooperative Society is located in the northern part of Murang’a, Central Province, approximately 140 kilometers northwest of Nairobi. The Murang’a region is a fertile agricultural oasis on the slopes of the Aberdare Range. Situated at an altitude of 1,740 meters, Kangunu features deep, well-drained, fertile volcanic soil rich in organic matter beneficial to coffee cultivation. Like other top cooperatives in Murang’a, farmers typically hand-sort coffee cherries before delivery for processing, discarding underripe or overripe fruits to prevent adverse effects on cup quality. Such meticulous details have a profound impact on the final coffee quality. This coffee is graded AA, the larger bean classification, with bean sizes ranging from 17/64 to 19/64 of an inch. While screen size does not necessarily guarantee superior cup quality, AA-grade coffee beans command the highest market prices.
